Ask them when a brake switch has started a fire. Probably somebody just started talking up the idea and nobody's ever seen it happen. I have seen some pretty cheesy switches on hanging pedals, made out of plastic and stamped steel, that are flimsily made and exposed to dirt and being kicked, in which case they may not come on or they may stick on, whereas the pressure-sensing ones seem to always work. As for the fuse, everything should have a fuse upstream of it somewhere, and the fuse should be of a size small enough to protect all the wire downstream. Do that, and you'll have no fire no matter what happens. Burnt wiring comes from bad crimp connectors and people cobbling in aftermarket stuff without thinking about wire size and fusing. A lot of wires provided with accessories are #20 or smaller. A typical 20 or 30 amp fuse is not going to protect them. Brake switches should have been factory wired with the right size wire and fuses rated to protect it. Maybe some doofus mickey-moused his wiring and caught it on fire, and the story grew from there.
