My 1996 turbo diesel barely turns the engine when I try to start it. 147,000 miles on it.
Thursday, the truck started fine 3 times. Turned it off for 5 minutes at a rest stop, would not start and would barely crank the motor. VERY SLOW turning until none at all.
First thought, dead batteries even though they are less than a year old. Never liked the way the engine cranks with those batteries from the FIRST ATTEMPT a year ago.
Alternator is approx year old.
Tried to jump start and put a starter/charger on it and a booster and the truck still did not crank or barely cranked.
After starting it by a 2nd gear jump start(being dragged by a tow truck), I drove 60 miles back home at night with full lights on.--NO Problem. Amp meter up to 14+. Would not even crank when I got home.
SO:
-Got two new batteries(old ones still under warranty). Still barely turns. Still sounds just like dead batteries. Have not tested the new batteries with a meter yet.
Can a bad starter give the same sound(a slow cranking sound) as a dead or low battery??
Other thoughts welcome.
Thank you,
