Once I started driving more, it quit backfiring and climbed the hill (1500') at full throttle with no trouble. I'm going to assume it was dampness in the ignition system somewhere. The temperature was down to near zero a couple nights ago, but this afternoon it was up to just above freezing, which is a good situation for getting condensation on things.
What has me puzzled is that it was definitely a backfire and not just a miss. I can understand it missing under due to a weak spark, but to backfire, something has to ignite the unburned gas that has gotten into the exhaust from the cylinder that didn't fire. Anyway, the engine passed the shake-down cruise pretty well and I'm not spending the night out in the woods in the snow.
