Check to make sure there are no cracks in the rubber fuel hose leading to the fuel pump. Cracks in the hose can allow in air causing intermittent symptoms similar to yours.
I've have also heard of rubber lines on the vacuum side of a pump collapsing internally starving the engine of fuel.
