I have a '77 M880 and have had to do a lot of trouble shooting of the wiring. Probably due to the Military hack job for other things. Get a volt meter and wiring diagram, I used the one in the Haynes book and it was acurate as far as the factory goes. I'm pretty sure the wiring goes through the plugs on the fire wall. You will need to ohm out the wire from the back of guage to the sender and see what you have. Probably a nick or melted insulation. I had to replace my sending unit due to bad reading at guage, not the same problem as you have.
