Since the point was brought up about the design that keeps the knuckle u-joint and hub bearings packed in grease seperate from the diff. oil,I thought I would bring up a point concerning the rear axle.
When I first explored the parts in the rear axle on my 64'WM300,I found that not only was there a seal in the back of the hub,but a matching leather seal on the outer hub nuggly fit around the spindle keeping the bearing grease seperated and diff. oil and from mixing with it.
I was once told that the outer seal was not needed as newer truck axles lubricated their bearings with the diff. oil.Sounded good until I was relating it to an old well respected mechanic,at which time he gave me a new pespective on why I had found such an original setup. In short, the seperation kept any broken bits or abrasive material from one or the other from traveling around to cause wear or damage anywhere else. What ever the truth is ,it does make sense to keep as many parts isolated and sealed as posible which leads me to ask,
Since the felt seal around the knuckle is saturated with oil on assembly, and is responsable for spreading lubrication and keeping dirt wiped off the knuckle ball, is there a marine or waterproof type oil to do this with or is the oil just to help spread the knuckle grease over the ball as you turn?Does any one make a CV type boot that would fit over our axles to enclose and protect the exposed knuckle ball from water or grit or would waterproof marine grease that gets spread on the ball be adequite enough for most situations?
