You're designing a security camera, and there are already lots of them out there, new and used, fancy and cheap. Normal video cameras take a picture something like 30 times per second, to provide the illusion of smooth movement. Security cameras are much slower, maybe once a second, which is still enough to catch the punk in the act, but doesn't need nearly as much storage. They have outputs that you can record on a VCR, hard disk, or a PC. Some connect via network cable, some use video cable, and some are wireless. $400 will get you a low-end turnkey system with several cameras, a monitor and a recorder. $30 will get you a cheap camera that you can plug into the VCR and TV you already have. There are lots of options, lots of places sell them, and they're getting cheaper all the time.
