OT question about video recorders

OK I was up looking at a cam recorder today , yes they take a memory card - but how long can you tape with one . What I would like to do is tuck one away in a corner and let it record for a few hours - come back and play the darn thing showing some idiot doing something illegal . 1/2 an hour will not cut it .
