Fuel Gauge Wiring

OK, I've re-wired the cab side of the 49 PW, and thought I had the fuel gauge wired correctly. The two leads that were the correct colors had a (if I remember correctly) 57'ish ohm reading (empty tank) and I wired them to the gauge as shown in the wiring schematics.

However after pouring 5 gallons in, the gauge still doesn't register. Is there a polarity to wiring it, could I have the wires backwards, or is it just more likely I have a bad float?
