instrument knob restoration

Like most people with old power wagons, my original instrument knobs have worn faces to the extent that it is almost impossible to see the lettering on them.
I would like to experiment with a junk knob or two as far as applying a paint product on them, then wiping it off to leave it in the embossed area.
The other option I thought of is to try and carefully paint in the depressions with a small stylus tool.
Does anyone have an orphan knob or two that I could buy for this experiment?
