Your qoute: "Not going fast enough to even be able to stay in fourth gear." indicates that you feel your truck lacks in power. There are many things that can cause this. Some range from the obvious to the obsurd.

Some have to do with operator or driver input or error:

- Are your tires too tall for the gearing you have?
- Are you trying to carry too heavy of a load?
- Are you not reving the engine high enough in third gear before shifting to fourth? There is a big jump between third and fourth.
- Are all of your routes always uphill or into a head wind?

Assuming all of these checks are okay, and the truck is in mechanicaly good shape, you should be able to easily drive all day at 45 mph.

Other things that can contribute to a loss in power generally fall into the catagory of mechanical problems:

- Poor compression.
- Improperly adjusted or otherwise malfunctioning governor and/or throttle linkage.
- Improper timing.
- Improper electrical adjustment and/or bad or worn parts.
- Improper carburetor adjustment and/or bad or warn parts.
- Poor fuel supply.
- Friction caused by dragging brakes and/or improperly lubed bearings.

Performance modifications will not fix any of the above problems. The first thing to do is to locate, diagnose, and correct any mechanical problems, issues, or malfunctions. With these problems eliminated, any Power-Wagon with 9:00x16 tires and 5.83:1 gearing, or with 7.50x16 tires and 4.89:1 gearing should easily travel at 45 mph while carrying an average load on improved highways.

After all of these areas are addressed is when the time comes for performance modifications, if you are inclined to expect more out of your truck beyond that which it was designed for.
