"Cranking rhythm test", Simple and basic compression test to check engine condition. Should be done at every tune up.
It pushes the limit of my musical ability. Here is how to:
Remove the coil wire so it won't start. Crank engine for s couple seconds, listening for rhythm. whmp-whmp-whmp-whmp-whmp- is good. whmp-whmp-whmp-----whmp is not so good. Maybe not so bad, you can hear a ten pound difference, which is within tolerance. But if you do hear a rhythm, do a dry compression test. I have no use for wet tests, if rings are bad it will show as blow by.
Also check the timing chain. Get underneath with a socket and breaker bar for the crank pulley bolt. Rock the crank back and forth, feeling for the looseness. Hopefully, Just an inch or less. Feel it? That is the amount of slack in the timing chain. One inch is the limit, it would be ready to jump and leave you stranded.
