There is probably a diagnostic spec, in degrees. Timing marks are not usually placed to be read from underneath. I always used 1".
My '96 F250, 150,000 miles, has only 3/8". I don't know what they did different, that is a long lasting chain. But the older stuff, I've seen 318 Mini-Motohomes throw a chain at 17,000. Plastic gears.
