The good news:The State of Washington has been gradually moving away from Calcium Chloride and Mag Chloride for the last few years on state highways. The bad news: they are moving to a salt sand combination and also applying a liquid salt brine solution. Seems they can make the salt brine solution for less money then they can buy the mag and calcium chloride. I almost hate to admit that I built about a dozen of the liquid application units that are currently in use by this state and some neighboring states. The company I work for also used to be distributors for the mag and calcium. I was GLAD when we stopped that as it was heck on our own tank trailers and equipment as well as everyone else's vehicles. We wouldn't need any of it if...The real problem is the people who don't slow down and drive responsibly on winter roadways. I would really like to see our state ban studded tires or at least charge a surcharge on them. The damage they cause to roadways that we all pay for is ridiculous. I commute 50 miles a day to work and do it with my all season tires even in the worst weather and don't have a problem because I drive responsibly. Sorry - I'll get off my soap box.
