If you are careful, and tack weld the piece in place before welding, and watch heat distortion, you can weld up a broken aluminum bellhousing. Don;t run the whole weld in one long bead. Take it in short steps and let it cool a bit before continuing. That way you won't have to machine the face.
I would not recommend doing this to a cast iron bellhousing. (And yes, there are cast iron automatics as well as automatics with seperate bellhousings.)
