I've had much better luck brazing instead of welding cast iron parts-
the cast is brittle and can't handle the stress put into welds,especialy arc/tig welds as the intense heat causes too much local stress. brazing (w/ oxy/acetylene especially)is softer and much more forgiving while still about as strong as mild steel.
