I think you are onto something. My '52 is very much like you describe also.
I wonder if the problem was with the B-3 trucks from 51 to 52.
The passenger door fits perfectly. The driver door is off at the belt line, and if I tried to match it up the top of the door would hit the door opening near the back of the cab.
I got it now where it will shut and I am happy, but too bad it looks a little "off".
