I too loved the Rifleman, and Branded, and many other movies/Tv shows with Chuck Connors. My Dad was 6'2" and he and Chuck played baseball and basketball in high school. Chuck had offers for pro basketball and baseball....
They both were die hard Dodger fans. My Dad and I both followed Mantle and MAris in the race to match the Babe...
My Dad talked of how they would have a tug of war with a basket ball...my Dad and Chuck would wrap their hand on the basket ball and try to tug it out of the others hand. As a kid my dad would palm a basketball and you could not get it out of his hand. indeed in high school I still could not pull the ball out of his one hand using both of mine...and I too was 6' 2" and 230 pounds!
