Heat Riser

Been working on fixing major exhaust leak between exhaust manifold and intake where the heat riser is located on my 52 Power Wagon with a 230. Finally fixed the broken studs and ready to put back together. The heat riser plate is gone and I was wondering if I should just block it off with a piece of sheet metal and limit the exhaust from heating the intake? You would think keeping the heat off the intake would be a good thing.
