Thanks Copey, Early in my fabrication business your question came up alot because people were facing keeping up with the competition. I would answer let the farmers and loggers do what they want to do and when it fails they will bring it in to us and we will fix it right and it will cost them more because we have to remove all of their atempted repair.
My rule of thumb is if you are doing it out in the rain and wind do it with stick, if in the shop mig fluxcore openarc subarc or any of the wire formats.
We still put down over 100,000# of openarc wire per year outside rain or shine but it is formulated for all conditions.
When some kid comes out to sell you rod or wire that will weld thru dirt and grease wind and rain and hold everything from stainless to springsteel just send him down the road.
