I like that test. A growler is one of those things that's on my list of tools I'd like to stumble across cheap at an auction someday. I agree about not knowing exactly what "known good" is with spark coils. It seems to me that on old engines, the coil isn't very critical, and when people try to work a lot of magic into the coil, the problem is really something else.
