When I was in the vehicle electrical school in Aberdeen proving grounds back in the 60s we would sabotage ignition systems with bad parts for the students to troubleshoot. was alot of fun.
We could get some of the old GMC engines to start without cranking the starters. Just saturate the coil by energizing it then shut it off to colapse the feild, then quickly turn ignition back on and they were running. That took a tuned enging for that.
Trick was to have the points closed and a piston just past TDC.
