I have had good performance out of surge brakes but I always test them with a tire iron before I hit the road. Like the article said many are not maintained. I like the brake controller that is tied into the tow vehicle brake system (Hydraulic over electric)so you have varying braking on both truck and trailer. I suppose now days they do that with the voltage but I have never installed anything newer.
