It coult could be burning that 1,000/qt. Leak won't fix that.

Thirty years ago, 1,000/qt was considered ideal. Just enough to be sure the rings and valves were getting lubed.

You might check the crank vent system- filter and pcv valve, and hoses. Crank pressure will push oil out of seals and gaskets.
