axel end play ????

On the front end of my WDX there is a large brass bushing inside the spindle. on one side the flange on the outer axle is rubbing on this bushing, but not on the other side. The only thing I can see that would limit the play in the axel assembly is the "freeze plug" in the cap that bolts on to the hub.(can't be so) Anyone been here before?
