A very similar thing happened to me in my Suburban (I know, I know, but I have to get my 4 kids around SOMEhow). I turned on my defroster, and POW. My interior lights and hazards worked, but not enough juice to turn it over. Not sure if the battery took out the alternator, or vice versa, but I ended up replacing both.
On a side note. It was the first Interstate brand battery that I have ever owned. I installed it in November of 94 and it just let go November 2000! Yes, I bought another :)
