Front axle bearings and cones...

I'm on vacation this week and determined to finish the axle/brake rebuild (The Good Lord willing and the Creeks don't rise...). Is the lower bearing (cone and cup) supposed to fall down on disassembly or stay up and tight? How do I determine excessive wear on the upper cone and cup? Thanks guys. Rick.
