I worked on a 304 V8 in a jeep CJ in the late 70's for a guy. As I recall the Jeep had about 50K on it and would barely run. A little investigation revealed that the timing chain had already streched badly and had jumped 1 tooth on the crank - the chain would actually touch together between the gears. I put a new gear and chain set in it and it ran like new. If the car has this engine or the 360 you might investigate.
