I always like the idea of a centrifugal pump on the driveshaft. No pumping, no power loss- until the water level reaches the pump. Then watch out! You've got a 300 hp bilge pump going there!
Reminds me of the Vet Nam era story of the jet boat, so shot up it was sinking. So the engine man took the inspection cover off the pump. Motive power used the water inside the boat for thrust. Saved the boat and the men.
