what kind of boat are you working on? the generally accepted and approved bilge pump scenario puts a small gpm bilge pump down low in the hull. on mine, it sits in the keel cavity. that pump is a 750 gph unit with a 3/4 hose and is automatic - meaning that it cycles every 2 minutes. is has some sort of brain that reads load on the impeller. no load, no water. it draws minimal amps. it is connected directly to the house battery and is fused. higher up, i have a 2000 gal per hour pump with what i believe to be a 1.5 inch discharge. it is not automatic. the thinking is that the smaller pump should be able to take care of any incidental water - shaft seal, deck hatches, etc. and the larger pump is to clear out the hull in an emergency. it is not good practice to run a large bilge pump as your primary because it needs a good deal of water to work. it will pump, cavitate and then return water to the bilge. my setup keeps the entire hull dry save for about a 1/4 max off the keel. if you have a need for a 24v pump because you cannot clear the water with a 12v it is likely your entire boat would require a larger charging / battery bank setup. hope it helps. BTW i run a dual battery setup - 2 group 27 batteries and use the blue sea 'add a battery' kit. it has been flawless. you turn the master on and the batts charge and discharge independently. need extra starting power? there is combine position on the switch. i replaced the manual on off 1, 2 type switch. it is a nice improvement. ebay the 24v and get the right 12 IMHO. regards, manny
