I wouldn't know about the sprayable coating, but sometimes my plates get a lot of mud on them. I drive on dirt roads. It rains. Mud happens. One time a cop asked me to clean them off, which I immediately did. Most of the time I don't pay a lot of attention to whether or not some mud has gotten on my plates. It's just not something I check. I guess if somebody rear-ends me they can say they couldn't see my car because my plate were muddy.
