Congratulations, you just learned why those magnetic cornerholders and magnetic backup strips are 100% worthless.
The magnetic field will chase an arc from a ¼" rod all over hell, the effect is multiplied at the amperages a HotGlueGun operates at. You ought to try welding on drillstem or bridge steel that has been magnetized, it's the textbook definition of arcblow.
If you weld near a magnet long enough you can and will eventually destroy the magnet though.
