Yesterday I was welding some holes shut on a PW bed. I had round 16 gauge plugs cut to fill the holes which were 5/8" diameter. I used a magnet from a computer hard drive to hold the plugs while I tacked the plug in place. The first pull of the mig gun trigger and it acted like I hadn't turned on the gas, all spatter. I knew my gas was on so I assumed it was the magnet causing the problem. Sure enough once the magnet was removed all was well. I found this puzzling that the magnet would cause this effect. What am I missing here? The magnetic pull interupting the electrical field ? Are these computer magnets different from the regular welding magnets?
