Two dumb questions, but looking for not

so dumb answers. Why did they make the axles for the m37 different(carrier placement) than the civilian and to repeat a question I asked earlier how long is the m37 short axle and how long is the civilian ff short axle. To me it looks like civilian drive shaft is almost a couple in. of straight from the tc to diff.
