Good idea. I understand what you're describing. I'm only doing this one pipe, 2 pairs of holes, so will probably just wrap a paper around it and measure carefully. The thing is I have to get this whole pipe thing fabricated accurately to match a pair of brackets that are already made and bolted to my chimney. When I go to all the trouble of hoisting this 100 lb pipe assembly up onto the roof, I really want it to fit right the first time because it would be a PITA to take it back down and re-work it.
