I believe the 1/2 ton axle shafts are smaller in diam than the 3/4 ton? If they are, you will have housing bushing issues. Also the 3/4 ton axles for a two pinnion and four pinnion are different lengths, so you will have length issues to deal with. In addition the 3/4 uses a different "U" joint (Bendix-Wiss), so you will have steering knuckle clearance issues to deal with. Even going from two to four pinnion on the 8-3/4 will result in 1/2 ton axle length issues. The spline count is 16 for the 3/4 ton axle and this may require changing the four pinnion carrier back to the early 3/4 ton two pinnion carrier/side gears to make that work.

You can intall a four pinnion 3/4 ton third member in a 1/2 ton with modification, and run 4.89 gears, but in all the above it results in a lot more work/money. If your objective is to have stronger axles, find 1/2 ton axle shafts that use the Rzeppa "U" joint, it's the strongest, but also the rarest. And you probably will need to modify the axle lengths for the four pinnion.

If it were me, I would go with a Lock-Rite locker #1210 and the Rzeppa axles to acheive a much strong unit. Less money and work in the long run.
