Dave, look up wood-gas. when I was doing the gas engine thing I read up on the process but have forgotten most of it. I remember that the trucks in germany during the war that ran on wood gas fouled plugs very badly(every 5or6 miles) the old generators didn't filter the gas and all the soot was pulled right into the engine. it can, and has been done, but if it's feasable today has yet to be seen. On another note, we had in the steel I worked at a motor you would have liked, the motor pulled the rolling mill rolls for the blooming mill. the motor was about 10to12 feet in dia. 10" shaft, cast iron, open frame motor, full pressure oiling on the babbit bearings. 1860 horsepower @ 60 rpm, yea, sixty, built in 1913 and used somewhere in canada. it was pursased out of a junk-yard and put back into service in 1953 and used until about 1999. it was the smoothest running motor I've ever seen. the operators would go from full forward to full reverse in a heartbeat and the old motor would just slow down and stop and then go the other way!! it was a wonder to watch the old motor work, and I consider myself lucky to have watched it. Dave.
