If you use the zerorust make sure the surface is as finished as you want it.The zerorust cures HARD and is difficult to sand down.I did a piece of farm equipment that was weathered as you descibed.I sprayed it down with "superclean",washed it with a hot
water pressure pressure washer,gave it a light sanding and wiped it down with prepsolv.Two light coats of zerorust to prime and finished with the mfc. factory implement paint,looks great,the neighbors think I bought a new mower/conditioner.
