Having hubs on a military vehicle would really be a disaster. Can you imagine under actual battle conditions having to stop and engage the hubs? Or worse yet, forgetting that you need to engage the hubs, getting the first vehicle stuck and everyone behind gets stuck?
I always figured this was why my W500 didn't have hubs, because it was a forest service fire truck. Same problem could come up.
Usually somewhere in the manuals it tells the driver to engage the hubs for 100 miles every 6 months or something like that.
For those who don't want to buy locking hubs, they could have a spare pair of drive flanges with the splines removed to allow the axle to turn and still keep the dust, dirt and mud out. JH
