Garwood 10,000# winch (light duty). 1 pc bumper

My 52 M-37 has the above winch which I am fairly sure was added by a previous owner. I'm going to replace the 150' of 7/16 cable.
Questions:
1. Is it correct for the cable to come off the top of the spool? I notice that the Braden is off the bottom.
2. Is 7/16 the correct size? It sure is stiff.
