im sure you could get bob stahl interested in the small diameter ring and pinion in 489 ratio. he is the resident gear swap guru and used a small 3/4 489 in the front of my command car. the rear was converted by mercedes in europe to the later large type. im running difft side diffs front and rear, but it works.
