I received a phone call last night from a local Ford tractor collector. He needs a Power-Wagon 5.83:1 ring and pinion set for his Elanco 4-wheel-drive Ford tractor conversion front axle. (It is quite the coincidence that we were just discussing this subject on the last forum - see link below).
It seems I was mistaken. Not all Elanco conversions used the 1/2-ton Dodge military axle with 4.89:1 gearing. Some of the later ones used 5.83:1 gears as found on the WWII 3/4-ton Dodge, M37, and WDX-WM300 Power-Wagon.
Someone, at some point in time, had substituted the original gears in his axle with a 4.89:1 set, and now the front wheels turn too fast and scrub badly. He really just needs the actual ring and pinion gears, but would take a whole 3rd member, if that is what it takes to get a good set. Elanco apparently fabricated their own 3rd member housings, so he would not be using most of the Dodge 3rd member assembly.
Cost is a factor for him, so he does not want to source parts through Vintage Power Wagons or tony Jacobs. These parts are for a restoration that will not see field use. A good matched set of used gears are what is desired.
I can be contacted at the email address by picking on my name in the header above, or by calling 309-372-8467. If emailing, put "Dodge Power Wagon" in the subject line as almost anything else gets deleted unless I recognise the sender. You can either deal directly with me, or I can give your contact to my Ford tractor friend so he can contact you directly.
Thanks,
Junior
