It sounds like your father earned himself a special place up above.
I recently attended a funeral of a close friend. One of his daughters got up to speak at the ceremony and related something she had read in a book provided to the family by Hospice. The referenced passage compared how we perceive ones passing to that of a ship leaving port. It went something along these lines:
We watch a ship leave port and soon it begins to dissapear over the horizon. We may be saddened and say, "Oh look, there it goes." At the same time we should know that somewhere, across the water, there is someone else watching the very same ship appear on the horizon and they are saying, "Oh look, here it comes."
The daughter found comfort in this simple passage. I was profoundly moved.
