My dad was a tough dude that no one messed with but was great with us five kids.
Quick story, when my dad was in the 82 Airborn, he did a combat jump into German occupied Holland, the was a 10 year old girl hiding in a bush near a farm house. She spoke dutch but was able to get accross to my dad that she needed help. Her and her 12 year old sister and 9 year old brother had been hiding for several weeks. They were jewish and had the Germans found them, they would have been killed. My dad carried the nine year old boy and had the two other girls in tow. The Germans started shooting at my dad as he came out with the kids. He held on to the boy and returned fire with his other hand. He got the kids into a ditch and continued to return fire. My dads buddies saw what was happening and helped my dad get the kids to the American lines. My dad took shrapnel to his back and the 12 year old girl but a dressing on it. The 12 year old girl died two days later when a bomb blew up just outside the American field hospital. The boy was so curious about the man who saved he and his sisters lives, that he came to America and became a citizen. in 1996, just before the 50th aniversary of D-Day he found my dad when he spoke at the reunion of the 508, he was able thank my dad and they have been friends ever since. Burt had three sonds and tons of grand children who are proud to be Americans. I am friends with Burts oldest son Mike.
