I've been told by a very wise Power Wagon mechanic (age 95 this year)they should be there for torque assistance. The bolts can snap from time to time and this somehow keeps that from happening. I believe him because he taught me how to change a head gasket nearly blindfolded, in the dark. "Can't get home after a fire in the middle of the night if the head gasket is blown, and who wants to stay here!" I distinctly remember him saying that on a hot August night while beating mosquitos and pine flies off. Sugar sand is no fun in August to sleep on, so I began turning wrenches real fast! There was always a head gasket survival kit on our state trucks, never went anywhere without one. To this day, I still carry everything needed when going on a long trip, weather in the woods or on the highway.
