Thanks Paul! I have run the GM NV4500 2wd in a Land Cruiser with great results. They are a little long, but the 4bt is pretty short- so it equals out. I have a friend here in Jackson Hole w/ a good 4bt and GM bellhousing. I agree the centered diff would be nice. I have seen the NP200 used in tractor pulls and am happy with it. I'll probably run the driveshaft from the e-brake yoke w/ a 44-45 rear axel. The truck is to be used for local cruising and hunting trips. No long road trips. I think I will skip power steering, but go for front disks and 4.89 gears, and a GM brake booster upgrade. If money becomes an issue, I suppose a 318 would work well w/ the stock tranny and probably pull pretty hard on the mountain passes. My dad had a M-37 in the 1970-80's that had a german diesel- no turbo. I like oil burners! Nothing like that low end grunt- that is until you run it out of fuel and have to spend an hour re-priming the injector pump.
Is it hard to modify the shaft from the output of the NV4500 to the divorced NP200? I would like to be able to keep the PTO. Otherwise, I would scrap the NP200 for an Orion II t-case, like I had in my Land Cruiser. It was twin sticked and had VERY low gearing. Thanks for your input- Winslow
