Engine knock

My daughters asked me to take them on a trail ride. during the ride there was an engine knock that started small, then got louder. I was about four miles from home and did not want to be stuck out there with my daughters, since it was getting. During the course of getting home I was praying it was a u joint. I isolated the noise to the engine. it starts fine and has no loss of power. I imagine that the knock occures when the cylinder fires against a worn piston. My plan is to pull the spark plug wires one by one till I find the culpret, sound right?? Robert N.
