Dave, is it popping while you are welding? if so, less heat, is it a basic incompatability between the two metals? mechanics wire, or baling wire as it's called here, is as soft as it comes and is very easy to weld. good flow,good bond. you could wash the weld after you are done.(smooth the weld out with the torch, with out filler rod). is the metal clean? very, very clean? no rust or paint? do not use coat hanger, it's really a pretty good steel, and not suited for what you are doing. hope you find the key to make your welds good. don't give up, not many of us can gas weld anymore.
