The holes appeared to have been burned in the bottom with a torch. I've "burned" holes in stainless, though, so that doesn't prove much. The stainless doesn't actually burn, but if you get it hot enough to melt, and then hit the oxygen, it will physically blow a hole through it. I don't think it's a true stainless alloy, because it does have some rust, and it makes sparks when I grind on it, but like I said, it's sat out in the weather for years with lots of paint scraped off of it here and there, and no grease or oil on the outside, and yet it has only the lightest surface rust. From what I've found about cor-ten, it should be reasonably easy to weld, even with a torch, but they do warn to not use too much heat. But they also say that small paint scratches on cor-ten will rust as fast as on ordinary steel and that the corrosion resistance of cor-ten only works of it's not painted. So, I'm doubtful that this is cor-ten, but I do think it's something "special" and is beyond my powers to deal with. Heck, maybe it's some rare alloy and it's worth $10/pound as scrap.
