I've used that method for years on my old Chevy pickup. When I was going back and forth between Idaho and "the coast" frequently, I'd actually re-time it depending on whether I was using Idaho gas or Washington gas. I could advance the spark more on Idaho gas without it knocking. When I had to run Washington gas in it, it'd knock on the first serious hill, and I'd get out and retard the timing a bit. Something about the anti-smog gas in Washington requires a more retarded spark. They're both rated 87 octane, so there's more to it than just octane.
I often wish more vehicles had a timing lever on the steering column like the Model A's did. That way you could advance it while you're driving on the flats at part throttle for maximum efficiency, and then retard it when you start up a hill so it wouldn't knock.
